After golden retriever pup Sunny completed his “scent search” training, his dad suggested that Sunny and tiny fairy Emi take a little break, mentioning that Mama had already prepared tea and snacks for them. Dad then went for a walk in the nearby woods, wanting to practice a bit himself so his skills wouldn’t get rusty.
This forest was a place overflowing with life. Beyond the vast variety of trees, it was filled with countless birds and flowers—especially woodpeckers, nightingales, robins, along with vibrant purplish-blue bluebells and sweet lavender. Dad chose this particular wood precisely because of its abundance of birds and blossoms; he hoped the birdsong and floral fragrances would help train him to stay even more focused during his searches.
“Why not see if I can sniff out where the little rabbits are hiding? “ He thought to himself.
However, it wasn’t long before Dad began to feel something was amiss. He felt as though he was completely wrapped in that sweet, lovely scent of Sunny and Emi. Was it just an illusion? Was his nose playing tricks on him?
As it turned out, it wasn’t the birdsong or the flower scents that were distracting Dad—it was the scent of Sunny and Emi that kept tossing his thoughts around! Deciding he needed answers, Dad made his way home to check on them. Perhaps they were happily enjoying their snacks, and besides, his nose surely needed a rest.
To his utter surprise, only Mama was at home. Sunny and Emi were nowhere to be found.
“Boo! Boo! Boo!” Sunny and Emi shouted with joyful glee from behind Dad, trying their best to give him a grand scare!
Yet, even before their loud “Boos!” rang out, Dad had already turned around and was looking right at them—they just couldn’t shut their mouths in time.
Sunny asked in wonder, “Dad, how did you know we were behind you? You didn’t notice us at all back in the forest!”
“You were in the forest just now?”
Emi chimed in excitedly, “Yes! We followed you the whole time without you ever catching us!”
Only then did the light bulb go off for Dad. He confessed his worries about being unsettled by their scent and fearing his nose was broken. Mama, Sunny, and Emi all burst into warm laughter. Mama smiled and said, “Dad, your nose is the absolute best! You have to trust it!”
Dad felt a touch embarrassed, yet deeply happy. Using his extraordinary nose, he took a gentle sniff of Mama, a sweet sniff of Sunny, and a soft sniff of Emi, before saying warmly:
“I shouldn’t just trust my nose—I should trust your sweet scents, too. Whenever I catch a whiff of you, I’ll know with one hundred percent certainty that you are right by my side.”
