Has anyone ever told you, “You smell so sweet”?
I’m sure someone has. Even if they haven’t lately, they must have when you were tiny! Babies and toddlers always carry this delicious, pleasing scent, just like fluffy cotton candy. So, back when you and I were very, very little, someone surely loved pressing their nose against our little cheeks, saying with a happy sigh, “You smell so sweet!”
Sunny, a golden retriever pup, and his dad were especially fond of the lovely scent on Emi. To them, Emi smelled even sweeter than strawberries! Because of this, they asked Emi to help out with Sunny’s training today. Sunny’s dad regularly helped him practice various skills—like controlling his bite strength or using the right spot for bathroom breaks. Today, Sunny’s challenge was “search training,” learning to use his super-sensitive nose to track Emi down.
Sunny’s dad covered his eyes with a towel and asked him to count down from fifty. Once the count was done, Dad would lift the towel, and Sunny could set off on his search. Emi thought this was absolute fun! Instead of hiding casually like she did in regular hide-and-seek, she slipped into a patch of rosemary, hoping its strong herbal scent would mask her own. Of course, Emi didn’t forget to curl herself into the tiniest little ball so Sunny wouldn’t spot her either. Unseeable and unreachable by scent, Emi waited with a joyous heart, completely sure of her victory!
Yet, no matter where Emi hid, Sunny tracked her down much faster than she ever imagined. Dad awarded Sunny a giant star sticker for his triumph, but he also gave Emi a big rainbow sticker to thank her for her help. Still, a bewildered Emi couldn’t help asking Sunny urgently:
“How did you find me so easily?”
Sunny used his amazing nose to gently nudge Emi’s little pointed hat and said, “Because you smell so sweet!”
Hearing those words warmed Emi’s heart completely. Wrapping her tiny arms around Sunny’s paw, she said with a bright, happy smile, “Then let’s rub my sweet scent onto you, so we can be sweet-smelling together!”
